PALIMPSEST

There are more than 15,000 artists in the visual arts in Canada. A chosen few manage to survive largely through subsidies. The rest, mostly, cope with insecurity if not with poverty. Surviving financially is, indeed, an everyday task, but most importantly, what's at stake is artistic survival. Thus, when confronted with all manners of oblivion, an artist needs to ponder on available means within one's own reach when creativity calls. An obvious path, one that we have learned from History of Art incidentally, is to consider using old canvases, even though they were, in their time, necessary evolutionary trial material. Their pertinence has become less prevailing in the overall trend of the artist, and the palimpsest, for that's what it is, becomes the necessary solution in times of hardship.
