Le Fort Nashwaak - Un projet d'unité et de collaboration
Description
Un fort typiquement du XVIIe siècle avec palissade faite de pieux debout. Un bastion en pointe de diamant terminait chaque extrémité. À l'intérieur des fortifications, il y avait trois bâtisses et un four. Ces bâtisses étaient :
- Le logis du commandement
- La caserne des soldats
- Le corps des gardes
Ce fort était situé sur la pointe sud-ouest à l'intersection des rivières Saint-Jean et Nashwaak. Après un siècle et demi, l'érosion de la rivière avait déjà fait ses ravages. En 1867, l'emplacement original était disparu et faisait déjà partie du lit de la rivière Saint-Jean. C'est ce que nous rapporte James Hannay dans son article sur le Fort Nashwaak publié dans Stewart's Quartely Magazine (1). William F. Ganong nous confirme cette information dans sa publication sur les lieux historiques du Nouveau-Brunswick en 1899 (2). Cette pointe de terre est maintenant occupée par la compagnie Irving, mais celle-ci doit évacuer les lieux prochainement et céder le terrain à la ville de Fredericton.
